Ortigia Sound System

Going on now through 31 July in Ortigia (Where the Piazza del Duomo pictured is located.) is the 3rd annual Ortigia Sound System, a music, design, and culture festival. Contemporary bands and DJs take to the streets, boats, and pop-up concert venues to push boundaries of modern music and entertainment. Designers host workshops about building and space. A marketplace offers more than 100 makers from around Italy showcasing their arts, crafts, and inventions. This is one of the reasons that after Palermo, Ortigia is my favorite city in Sicily–not only is it beautiful and ancient, but it’s forward-thinking and full of artists and musicians. I guess for now, I’ll have to admire it from afar in New York… Until September’s Savoring Sicily tour anyway!
