The ancient Greek god Dionysus is the central character in The Bacchae by Euripides, pictured here from when I saw the play in 2012 in the amphitheater at Siracusa, produced by the National Institute of Ancient Drama (INDA) as part of their annual Greek theater festival. Last week, I saw The Bacchae again at Brooklyn Academy of Music with Tony Allicino, with whom I’m co-hosting next May’s Myths & Mysteries of Sicily: As Above/So Below. We were inspired by Euripides’ presentation of this significant deity and how we might weave his cults’ story into our itinerary program.

Meanwhile, already in the plans is to experience a presentation of the INDA in the amphitheater in Siracusa. We don’t yet know what the production will be, but having seen many over the years in this, the third largest amphitheater in the world, it is bound to be superlative! Join us for this uncommon journey through Sicily, May 23 – June 4, 2019. It’s going to be otherworldly!
