The Ancient Art Of Basket Weaving In Sicily

Claudio Romano has a deep knowledge of medicinal herbs and wild plants, especially those from the Hyblaean Mountains of southeastern Sicily. Building on his passion for flora, Romano learned the art of basket weaving, a practice that has existed since humans sought containers to keep their foodstuffs and other products. Watching him work and learning from him how these beautiful containers are made and of what plant materials they are made is a lens into an ancient world.

Who knew that stopping to talk with him would open a window onto something so profound? These types of priceless interactions are what you’ll encounter when you join Experience Sicily for our travel experience Life in A Remote Sicilian Town, from July 16-25, 2020. For ten days, you’ll live among the locals in the village of Licodia Eubea, spending cool starry evenings encountering your new friends in the cafes along the Strada Lunga and gorgeous summer days exploring the region’s outstanding UNESCO sites and more.
