May 1 is Labor Day in Italy. It’s celebrated, not only by recognizing the labor force, but also by barbecuing and picnicking with friends and family as tribute to the start of the summer months. This painting from 1950 is called Farmers at Work, or “Contadini al lavoro.” It is by Bagherese painter Renato Guttuso.
I love this painting. So vibrant and full of energy. The colors are really strong and match the scene. The style reminds me of another painter who’s well-known, but I can’t think who it is right now.
Yes, Dana, Guttuso really exploits colors. He really reflects the saturation of emotion that exists in Sicily.
