Day 4 of 16 Days of Sicily | Wines, Vines, and Volcanoes

Sicily is teeming with grapes (and at least three active volcanoes), so I implore you, open your mind and heart to wines you haven’t heard of, and you will be so happy that you did. Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Perricone, Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese (and these are just the reds!), (now for some white) Catarratto, Carricante, Grillo, Inzolia/Ansonica, Malvasia di Lipari, and Zibibbo are the jewels of Sicily that produce many outstanding wines (and are sometimes blended with grapes that you probably already know like Chardonnay and Shiraz).

NB I’m giving you the Cliffs Notes of the Cliffs Notes here, as an introduction. My point is: let’s walk through the vines together. Let’s understand, for example, how the volcanic soil from Mount Etna, which dominates Eastern Sicily and produces outstanding wines, or how the salty-sandy soil of Southeastern Sicily or the limestone-rich soil of Western Sicily indicate the complex flavors of the remarkable labels coming from this sunny island. Let’s stand in an ancient Palmento (the facility where they actually did stomp on grapes!). Let’s walk through the cantina and learn if it’s oak, stainless steel, or cement… and so much more. Wine is fun! During all of our 2024 small-group tours we will drink varietals from all over the island and explore at least one winery.

For May’s Enchanting Sicily and October’s Stunning Sicily we have extensive tastings and even go to “wine school” on Mount Etna.
