Ancient Myths Light The Way

The legend of Santa Lucia starts before the early 4th century CE, when the maiden was killed by Roman soldiers for being Christian. Lucy’s story as we know it today starts with the ancient Greek divinities Demeter and Persephone. Demeter is the goddess of the grain, the harvest, and fertility. Persephone, Demeter’s daughter, is the goddess of the underworld. In this role, she assists souls crossing over from the upper world to the lower world. She lights the way. Some of these roles were transferred to Santa Lucia, the patroness of grain, light, sight, and eyes.

During our luncheon feast for Santa Lucia on Sunday, December 8 Cacio e Vino in New York City, we’ll talk about these legends and more. (Also during our May 2020 tour!). I invite you join us on Dec. 8 for our Experience Sicily community Festa di Santa Lucia!
