The Light of Life

The Norman cathedral at Cefalù is world-renowned for its elegant amalgamation of architectural styles and its Byzantine-style mosaic of Christ Pantocrator. Not to take anything away from those breathtaking features; however, a pleasant addition inaugurated in 1990 is the stained glass windows designed by Palermo artist Michele Canzoneri. The 72 abstract designs were inspired by stories from the Old and New Testaments. Canzoneri sought to exploit how natural light entering through the stained glass harmonically converses with the spiritual aesthetic of the Medieval cathedral—a beautiful approach when one considers that the inscription accompanying the Christ Pantocrator mosaic (from the Gospel of John) translates to, “I am the light of the world. Who follows me will not wander in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
