This September, be bewitched by Sicily! During Enchanting Sicily, we’ll discover the region’s hidden corners, interact with locals, immerse ourselves in Sicilian culture and history, and explore UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Valley of the Temples, the Roman Villa of Casale, Mount Etna, the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, and the Arab-Norman gems of Palermo. We’ll wander through charming historic centers such as Erice, Taormina, and Ortigia, and we’ll relish long meals in traditional trattorias and savor the bouquets of local vintages. Our accommodations are family-run inns and elegant hotels. Our companions are local, licensed guides, expert drivers, and Experience Sicily’s chief curator, Allison Scola and her Sicilian cousins. This experiential, multi-sensory tour is designed for the traveler who wants to delight in every minute with a hands-on cooking class, an olive orchard and vineyard tour, live music performances, intellectual discussions about Sicily’s past, present, and future, and so much more!

Day 2 | Friday, September 15

  • Private transfer from Palermo airport to our 4-star inn in Trapani
  • Settle in, rest, and enjoy the beautiful property
  • Breakfast and lunch are on your own
  • Late afternoon welcome meeting, meet-and-greet, and review of our tour together
  • Visit the charming, mountain-top, walled town of Erice
  • Dinner as group featuring traditional Sicilian cuisine

  • This morning, we’ll meet the sheep! And the farmer, and taste fresh, regional cheese as its being made.
  • In the hill-top town of Salemi, we’ll learn about the annual Festa di San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph’s Day) and the extraordinary ritual bread and altars made for the annual thanksgiving celebration.
  • Free time to enjoy the pool and surrounding scenery of our inn

  • Today, we’ll commune with the turquoise sea aboard a comfortable leisure boat from where we’ll explore Sicily’s coastal islands and the fishing villages that grace them. It’s a full day, so bring your suntan lotion and swim suit.
  • We’ll swim right off the boat in hard-to-reach-by-land spots.
  • More details about this dreamy excursion will be available closer to departure.

  • After we check-out of our inn, we’ll be on our way to Castelvetrano where you’ll see one of Italy’s most extraordinary examples of baroque stucco art—“Sicily’s Sistine Chapel.”
  • Before lunch, we’ll have a lesson in how to taste olive oil, learn about olive cultivation, and then enjoy a feast of traditional south-western Sicilian cuisine at a DOP recognized olive farm.

  • Hands-on cooking class with a local mamma—You’ll love bringing the recipes home and sharing them with your friends and family for years to come.

  • Be fascinated by the intriguing UNESCO World Heritage Site, Villa Romana del Casale, a treasure of Roman mosaic scenes including the “Bikini Girls”

  • Check in to our cliff-side hotel, then enjoy time on your own to explore shops and restaurants in the bewitching town of Taormina

Day 8 | Thursday, September 21

  • Some guests may be saying goodbye today, while others may join us for the remainder of our trip.

  • Free day to explore the cliff-top town of Taormina with its elegant boutiques, enchanting medieval alleyways, and stunning ancient Greek amphitheater

  • Today we’ll explore another UNESCO World Heritage Site: Mount Etna. This environmentally charged visit to Europe’s largest, most active volcano will be led by expert, local guides
  • We’ll learn about the volcano while visiting different craters, eruption points, and lava caves.
  • For lunch, we’ll picnic on local specialties and wine supplied by our hosts.
  • As we make our way down the volcano, we’ll take time to savor some spectacular vintages with a tour and tasting at one of Mount Etna’s most celebrated vineyards.
  • Dinner is at your leisure in Taormina.

  • After we check-out of our hotel, we’ll drive south to Ortigia, the home town of the ancient scientist Archimedes.
  • Together, we’ll shop at the Antico Mercato with a local mamma who will explain seasonal produce and ingredients, local spices and artisanal products, and the fishing trade to us—and we’ll meet some friends too.
  • For lunch, we’ll dine as a group amid Ortigia’s vibrant open-air marketplace.
  • This afternoon, we’ll travel back in time with our private guide during a tour of Siracusa’s archeological park that features one of the ancient world’s most impressive amphitheaters, after which, we’ll be stimulated by ancient art and archaeological finds in the Museo Orsi.
  • Once we check in to our hotel, you can enjoy dinner and the charm of Ortigia at your leisure.

  • Today, we’ll relish Sicily’s “Stone Garden,” the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • With our local, private guide, we’ll learn about the splendid baroque architecture and life in Ragusa and Modica.
  • For the evening, you’ll have time on own for dinner and further exploration of Ortigia island’s shops, galleries, and Baroque Duomo dedicated to Santa Lucia.

Day 12 | Monday, September 25

  • This morning we’ll drive north towards Palermo, oimg_20160221_230005.jpgnce we get to the Tyrrhenian Sea coast, we’ll enjoy lunch at a local seaside pizzeria.
  • We’ll check in to our family-run agriturismo, and you’ll have time to rest and enjoy the pool and property.
  • Dinner as a group at Allison’s favorite, local trattoria.

Day 13 | Tuesday, September 26

  • Our local, expert guide will lead us through Palermo’s ancient streets and open-air markets. Highlights of our day are sites that are part of the Arab-Norman Palermo UNESCO World Heritage site, including the magnificent cathedral of Monreale. 
  • Lunch featuring the city’s famous street food delicacies
  • Relaxed dinner at our agriturismo

Day 14 | Wednesday, September 27

  • Visit to local ceramicist’s workshop
  • Conversation with two regional prosecutors working to combat organized crime in Sicily and Europe

Important Notes to Consider

  • The tour officially begins with your airport transfer to our inn on Friday, September 15, 2017. If you are taking advantage of the Part I or Part II itinerary only, departure or arrival is September 21, from Catania airport. If following Part II only, your tour officially begins with your airport transfer from Catania airport to our hotel in Taormina.
  • The boutique nature of this itinerary means that it is subject to change as we get closer to departure. Our objective is to include activities and events that are tailored to our guests’ interests. Therefore, in most cases, changes will enhance your experience, as it is our mission to provide you with the most memorable experience in Sicily.
  • The trip price is for double occupancy and does not include airfare. There is a single supplement of $975 (or $500, if opting to join us for only Part I or Part II).
  • For full itinerary (Part I and Part II), fly into and out of Palermo airport. Flights from the U.S. will depart the night before (on September 14) and arrive the morning or afternoon of September 15. Our first group event will be in the evening of September 15. Please plan accordingly. The dates of the full tour coordinate with direct flights on Meridiana airlines from New York JFK to Palermo.
  • If taking advantage of Part I only, your tour ends with a regular check-out of our hotel in Taormina and private transfer to Catania airport on Thursday, September 21. Your arrival city is Palermo, please plan accordingly.
  • If taking advantage of Part II only, your tour begins with your private airport transfer from Catania airport and regular check-in to our Taormina hotel on September 21. Your departure city will be Palermo. Please plan accordingly.
  • Details about our accommodations will be released once you have paid in full. All information will be emailed to you approximately 30 days before departure.
  • Tour price includes costs for all excursions, planned entertainment and ticket prices, tour transportation, and all but 7 meals (consult day to day description for details). If taking advantage of Part I only, all but 4 meals are included. If taking advantage of Part II only, all but 4 meals are included.
  • Tour price does not include airfare, travel insurance, or personal purchases and gifts.
  • The meals included in the tour price include 2 glasses of wine and/or soft drinks per meal. If you wish to enjoy additional wine or other alcoholic beverages beyond this allotment, you are welcome to purchase them separately from the group’s bill.
  • The cost of this tour does not include travel insurance; however, it is highly recommended that you purchase a comprehensive plan to cover the costs of your airfare, tour, loss of luggage, and medical expenses.
  • Gratuities are included, however, at the conclusion of the tour, if you are pleased with the hospitality and service of our local driver/guide, additional recognition at your discretion is appreciated.
  • Sicily is a large region that requires a lot of driving. It is also very mountainous and, as a result, has many winding roads. We have designed the itinerary to break up the driving as much as possible, but on some days, long drives will be necessary. If you suffer from motion sickness, please bring motion-sickness medication with you.
  • You must be in good physical health to enjoy this tour. Although we will not be engaging in physically rigorous excursions, there is a significant amount of walking on various surfaces and types of terrain as well as standing for extended periods of time, especially at archaeological sites.
  • Please inform us in advance regarding any dietary restrictions, food allergies, and other personal concerns.
  • Experience Sicily appreciates constructive criticism and feedback. If you have any suggestions or issues while on the tour, please approach Allison privately to discuss thoughts and solutions.
