Day 15 of 16 Days of Sicily | Salt Flats and Conveniences

Day 15 of 16 Days of Sicily | Salt Flats and Conveniences | There are so many things in modern life that we take for granted. Through visiting Sicily and learning about life here – – from ancient times to the present era – – we can find a new grounding. For example, a tour of the Museum of Salt and the Culcasi salt pans in Trapani province shows us the process of harvesting salt from the sea. It explains how this most essential element of our daily lives isn’t so easily procured. Sure, we learn about table salt, but we also learn about the ingenuity of ancient cultures, such as the Phoenicians, who started this process in order to preserve their tuna catch, and the Greeks, specifically Archimedes of Siracusa, whose “screw” still today enables water levels to be manipulated for evaporation. This then leads to discussions of our ease of having electricity versus oil lamps to light our evenings. The availability of clothing and textiles versus having to weave our own with a loom at home. The ability to go to the supermarket for our lunch versus growing your own food – – to name just a handful of conveniences. In other words, one passeggiata in the shadow of antique windmills to see some salt can inspire greater appreciation for life as we know it. We’ll be back at the salt flats in October during our Stunning Sicily tour.
