A dagger? Eyes on a plate? What intrigue!

(Continued from an earlier post…) Inspired by Sant’Agata of Catania before her, Lucia refused to participate in the activities of the brothel to which she was condemned. This of course, angered the madame, who called the Roman authorities to further punish the maiden. Somewhere in this mayhem, Lucia’s eyes were either gouged out by the Roman soldiers or she did it herself to make herself unattractive to the pagan to whom she was promised in marriage and/or the clients at the brothel (Hence, she holds her eyes on a plate.). Meanwhile, when the Romans showed up, Lucia’s strength became superhuman! The soldiers couldn’t move her. That’s where the dagger pictured comes in… (To be continued…)
