The Black Madonna of Tindari

Legend is that no one knows from where the statue of the Black Madonna of Tindari originated; However, her sanctuary, perched atop a magnificent seaside promontory, was, since ancient Greek times, the site of a temple dedicated to the Earth goddess Cybele. Scholars believe the cult of the Black Madonna to be the descendants of those from the mystery cult of Cybele. September 8 is Tindari’s Feast of the Madonna Nera.
