Saint Joseph’s Day, or La Festa di San Giuseppe, is celebrated annually on March 19. San Giuseppe, the spouse of the Virgin Mary and the guardian-father of Jesus is a highly venerated saint in Sicily and Italy. The patron of fathers, carpenters, and those who toil for their work, his feast day — which by no mistake is aligned with the spring equinox — is observed practicing many beautiful traditions, mostly concerning food. It is a holiday that recognizes having survived a drought caused by a severe famine in the 10th century, but metaphorically, that famine is also the season of winter.
Our gathering today is more than just a cooking class featuring traditional Sicilian recipes enjoyed for the feast. It will be a cultural immersion that is co-hosted by Allison Scola of Experience Sicily, a boutique tour operator that specializes in locally-seasoned, multisensory travel in Sicily, and Annalisa Pompeo of GoSicily Sicilian Cooking Experiences, a hands-on, experiential excursion operator and cooking school based in Favara, Sicily. In cooperation with Babylon Mercantile, today’s events (a lunch and a dinner, both following the same agenda) will stimulate your intellect and capture your senses.
