Palermo Soccer Club: Rosanero

image

This is one of my prized possessions: my Palermo soccer team jacket. Soccer, or “calcio” in Italian, is Italy’s religion after Catholicism. I don’t say that lightly. In Sicily, there are many professional teams, but the top-ranked club from the region is the Unione Sportiva Città di Palermo (“Palermo” for short and “rosanero” for those in the know), which was founded in 1900. The team’s colors are pink and black (from where it gets its “rosanero” nickname), and it plays its home games at the Stadio Renzo Barbera which served as the chief stadium for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
