Scholars think this elephant is pretty cool. Reason being is that it shows the elephant moving between two ships; in other words, the moving of African animals by Romans to Rome for gladiatorial games, through Sicily. We know this because this image, which we’ll see on Day 5 of our May 2018 Myths & Mysteries of Sicily tour, is part of the detailed scene in the 4th century C.E. Roman Villa del Casale’s corridor called the Ambulatory of the Big Game Hunt in Piazza Armerina. It’s a sort of history book that recounts life in Roman Sicily, made of mosaic tiles and then preserved for centuries!
See this and more than 4,000 square meters of mosaics like it up close! Reserve your spot on this magnificent tour by Nov. 1, and you will save up to $400/person. Learn more at ExperienceSicily.com.
