I Can’t Figgettabout Buccellato

image

These beautifully sculpted cookies are called buccellato (single pastry/cookie) or buccellati (plural). Buccellati are very closely associated with Christmas in Sicily. They are pastries stuffed with dried figs and raisins or chopped almonds and chocolate.

These pictured, from Maria Grammatico Pasticceria in Erice, are of the fig variety. I don’t know Maria Grammatico’s recipe exactly, but generally, the filling is made of chopped dried figs, pumpkin jam, honey, raisins, almonds, orange rind, cinnamon, and Marsala wine. The outer dough is soft to the bite. Now, inhale, and you might just be able to smell them!

  1. Oh.My.Goodness. When I read the description of the filling (& added in the chocolate you also mentioned), I was a goner! And the soft dough on the outside. This is The Perfect Treat. (I love your title – reminded me right away of Stephen King’s “Fuhgeddaboutit!) Buccellati – yes, plural! <3 🙂
