Traditional Dress of a Sicilian Cart Driver

According to “Il costume popolare in Italia,” a book by Emma Calderini published in 1934, this is an illustration of what Sicilian cart drivers, or carrettiere, typically wore. So, if you need a last-minute Halloween costume idea, you might be able to pull this off! Just know that in addition to transporting goods–often through the night–cart drivers sang. So, to complete your costume and get into character, refer to this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVIwYgmVR1o featuring Giovanni DiSalvo, the keeper of the singing tradition in Bagheria that our Experience Sicily group met earlier this month. Start practicing now, because it’s not such an easy singing technique!

    1. Yes, it’s pretty extraordinary. But that’s part of the point. It’s athletics… Because cart drivers competed with each other…. Which could sing longer and create the most beautiful stories with their songs.

    1. He’s a difficult person to get a hold of Claire!
