White & Black

The area around the crater of Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, sports a black lava surface. So, when it snows like it did last week, as shown here, the contrast between the white powder and the hardened, black lava is stunning.

  1. So that’s what snow looks like on lava. Cool! It snows sometimes on Kilauea, Hawaii, too, but I’ve only seen lava flowing and bubbling. 🙂

    1. Ah, Hawaii…. Someday I’ll get there. Volcanos have a wild energy that really shows you who is boss.

      1. I love that – volcanos have a wild energy! They certainly do show you who’s boss. Driving through Volcano National Park was an unforgettable experience. Just driving – you aren’t allowed to pull over and get out of your car. Boss!

It was very dramatic to see the black lava contrasted with the snow on Mt. Etna last week! Great photo! Footsteps prove that we were really there! Glad we didn’t get blown away with the fierce winds on those snowy ridges!!! This is a must see for those fortunate enough to visit Sicily!!!
