Sweet Bitter

Palermo’s soccer team is officially called the Unione Sportiva Città di Palermo, but it’s affectionately known as Rosanero. They play at the Renzo Barbera stadium in Palermo, which seats more than 36,000 fans. The team will be playing against Roma on Saturday, when they’ll apply their sweetness and bitterness (“Rosa/Pink like a sweet, Nera/Black like a bitter”), hopefully to achieve victory.

  1. I like their name, Rosanero – well, the nickname. Whenever I think of soccer/fútbol, I think of my visit to the La Boca stadium in Buenos Aires where their favorite team, Boca Juniors, plays. There is a seat in the stadium reserved for “God” – aka Diego Maradona, greatest ever soccer player in their view – and I visited their locker rooms with my friend Claudio and he pointed out all the statues (of all sizes) of the Virgin next to and on top of players’ lockers. Very religious about their fútbol there, to say the least!

  2. Dana, I love this account of your visit to the soccer stadium in Buenos Aires! You’re giving me some ideas…

  3. Really? I have pictures from my visit – one of Claudio lying prone on the soccer field kissing it!!! I’m curious about your ideas…
